Let’s get people talking. Give them something that raises their eyebrows - an insider tip or something funny that cracks them up. No wonder, that information is going to be all over the place.

That’s exactly what you want with your brand or a product. A buzz about your product in the market. You want your product to be the center of attention.

Buzz marketing is the oldest form of marketing but still very modern and edgy. And which is why, CMOs prefer buzz marketing that catches user interest and increases the chances of getting people talking. It does not create brand awareness alone, but also makes people go bananas.

For instance, Avengers Endgame,  Marvel's 11-year narrative known as the Infinity Saga, grossed $1.2 billion worldwide in its opening weekend, breaking all kinds of records. The buzz about the movie has been on since its first trailer. The marketing and advertising team of the Marvel studios didn’t have to do anything because it generated a lot of word of mouth marketing since its first trailer launch.

However, buzz marketing can also go wrong and backfire you. Ensure your product meets the customers’ expectations before you hype the product. Supposedly, you organized a music festival at some amazing tourist spot. You started campaigning about the festival. Asked noted social media celebrities to promote this festival. Showcased luxurious villas, scrumptious food, best DJ’s and more. Generated a lot of hype and guess what, a lot of tickets were sold. But, for the attendees, it was just an eye wash. Instead of the luxury villas and scrumptious food, they were provided tents and sandwiches. As a result, people started bashing this festival on social media and the rest of the shows were cancelled.

Before anything else, ensure your product is full of substance that your customer would want.

Other than this, you can use different appeals to get that attention from the customers. Most of the brands, major company CMOs use these appeals to create a buzz about their product. And not to our surprise, they work.

Raise their Eyebrows:

Let’s admit, people love controversies. This way or that way, people talk about something that is scandalous. You must be careful with the content because you don’t want to hurt the sentiments. But controversial content works.

Fastrack, known for breaking the stereotypes launched a campaign “Sorry for What” for youngsters. They showed youngsters embracing themselves for who they are without being apologetic. It generated a lot of curiosity among youth and brought them to their stores.

Similarly, United Colors of Benetton created a buzz in the market when they featured the image of three human hearts and the words "white", "black" and "yellow" displayed across them. It was something that people could not take their eyes off and got them talking. The brand did not promote their products through this campaign but just a general message promoting equality. However, this ad got Benetton under scanner which people did not forget for a long time.

Psssst:

Psstt. We have got a secret to share. Everyone wants to know everything. Nobody wants to have a feeling of FOMO. So, spill some secrets about your product and let them think and talk about it. For instance, give a little sneak peak such as pictures or a teaser about the product. Use “behind the scenes” strategy to keep your audience hooked.

That is so Weird:

This is one sentence that gets a lot of attention. Bizarre idea or content can get you under the spotlight right away. OMG, that is so bizarre, have you seen this, why is he doing it are some questions that will do the rounds. But it’s good. For instance, Will it Blend, YouTube campaign has garnered an instant attention. The scientist would just blend anything and everything. It is clearly stupid but who cares? You know, what I mean.

Crack Them Up:

Not literally. Hit your funny bone and throw in some hysterical content. People find it cool and relatable. Brands post funny content, images, tweets on social media to lighten the mood and make people like them more. It works. Brands like Skittles, Wendy’s, Netflix, Taco Bell post hilarious, savage posts which are a hit amongst the audience. In fact, people eagerly wait for their posts on social media.

Dare to be Different:

You have got to beat your competitors to be the best. Forget being boring and cliche liners. Think out of the box and grab people’s attention. Exactly what KFC did in 2016. They literally brought their tagline “Finger Lickin’ Good” to life and launched two edible nail polishes. It certainly created a lot of hype worldwide and became a hot topic on the social media.

If you think, you are ready to take a plunge then consider the above buzz marketing tricks. But be very sure about your audience and products because as we said it can also backfire.
